For this district, Badgerys Creek changed the geography rather than simply adding a choice. From 74 of the 75 suburbs we serve, Western Sydney International at Badgerys Creek is the closer airport — from Camden and Narellan, dramatically so.
The basics
Western Sydney International is a working passenger airport with a single terminal building handling all departures and arrivals. That single-building layout is its most useful feature for anyone travelling from here: there is no international-versus-domestic split to get wrong, no inter-terminal train, and no possibility of being at the right airport and the wrong end of it.
Both dates matter because a good deal of published material — including planning documents written before the schedule firmed up — still says December 2026.
The route from Wollondilly and Macarthur approaches from the south and west and avoids the M5 East and the airport tunnel entirely. Those two stretches are where most of the unpredictable delay on a Mascot run accumulates, which makes the Badgerys Creek drive not only shorter but more reliable.
Distance
Measured road distance and drive time, against the same figures for Sydney Airport.
| District | To WSI | To Sydney Airport | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wollondilly Shire | 12–113 km | 60–160 km | WSI closer |
| Macarthur | 11–72 km | 44–72 km | WSI closer |
| Southern Highlands | 81–126 km | 93–138 km | WSI closer |
Road distances from routing rather than straight-line estimates. Your own suburb's exact figures are on its Western Sydney Airport page. Each airport has its own fixed fare, and Western Sydney is usually the cheaper one.
The honest bits
Of our 75 suburbs, exactly one is closer to Mascot: Darkes Forest, at 52 km to Sydney Airport against 72 km to Badgerys Creek. Its own pages say so rather than repeating the general claim.
The rail line from the airport runs north to St Marys. For Wollondilly, Macarthur and the Southern Highlands that is away from home, not towards it. Getting to St Marys to use it costs more time than driving the whole way to the terminal.
A newer airport has fewer airlines and fewer destinations than Kingsford Smith. Check that your route actually flies from here before optimising the ground trip.
We publish a separate fare from each suburb to Mascot and to Badgerys Creek, and the Badgerys Creek run is usually the cheaper of the two. The shorter drive is not charged for.
Choosing
Airfare and schedule will decide this for most people, and they should. What we can tell you with confidence is the ground half of the journey, because we drive both runs every day.
From Camden, Narellan, Oran Park and the western Macarthur estates the difference is large — often half an hour or more each way, on a route that avoids the least predictable roads in Sydney. From the Southern Highlands the gap is narrower but still real. From Wollondilly it depends on where in the shire you are, and the suburb pages carry the exact numbers rather than a generalisation.
Because each airport has its own fixed fare, the ground comparison is about price as well as time. If the flights are comparable, the drive is a sensible tiebreaker — and it is worth counting both directions, since the return leg is the one you make tired.

Everything else
At Badgerys Creek, about 44 km west of the Sydney CBD and considerably closer to this district than Mascot. It is reached from the south and west, so the run from Wollondilly and Macarthur never touches the M5 East or the airport tunnel.
From 74 of the 75 suburbs we serve, yes — often by 20 to 30 minutes each way, and by more from Camden, Narellan and Oran Park. The single exception is Darkes Forest, which is 52 km from Mascot against 72 km from Badgerys Creek.
One, handling all departures and arrivals. There is no domestic-versus-international split, no inter-terminal transfer and no wrong building to end up at.
Not usefully. The metro line runs north from the airport to St Marys, which is the opposite direction from Wollondilly, Macarthur and the Southern Highlands. Reaching St Marys in order to travel back south takes longer than simply driving to the terminal.
No — from most suburbs it is cheaper. We price by the suburb you are travelling from rather than by the destination, so you get the shorter drive at the same published number.
Yes, with the same structure as any airport: pre-booked rates are considerably cheaper than driving up. The comparison against a transfer works out much as it does at Mascot, except that the self-drive trip is shorter from almost every suburb we serve.
Yes, at any hour, with sixty minutes of free waiting from touchdown. A number of international schedules put arrivals well after midnight and those are ordinary bookings for us.
The route network is still developing and changes often enough that anything we printed here would go stale. Check with your airline or the airport directly — and check it before you plan the ground trip, not after.
