The answer depends almost entirely on one thing: whether you booked the car park in advance. A pre-booked budget long-stay space can start around $190 a week and may well undercut a return transfer. Turn up at the terminal gate without a booking and you will pay several times that. Most comparisons quietly pick whichever figure suits them.
Why the two numbers differ so much
Airport car parks price like airlines. Capacity is fixed, so the operator discounts heavily to fill spaces in advance and charges a premium to anyone who arrives without a reservation. The gap between the two is not small: pre-booked long-stay rates and drive-up gate rates at Sydney Airport can differ by a factor of several.
There is a second split, between the airport's own car parks and the independent operators a few minutes away that run a shuttle to the terminal. The off-airport budget options are usually the cheapest headline number of all, at the cost of a shuttle ride with your luggage at both ends.
Because these rates move without notice and vary by terminal, by car park and by how far ahead you book, we are not going to print a table of them here and let it go stale. Check the operator's own site for the dates you actually need. What we can do is be clear about which costs the parking price does not include.
Those are: the two return drives you make yourself, the fuel for 120 to 220 kilometres of it per journey depending on your suburb, the wear on the car, and the fact that your vehicle spends the holiday in a car park rather than in your garage. None of that appears on a parking quote, and all of it is a real cost.
Side by side
| Airport parking | Fixed-fare transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest headline price | Often parking, if pre-booked | Fixed per suburb |
| Price if you have not pre-booked | Much higher | Unchanged |
| Who does the driving | You, twice | We do |
| Fuel and vehicle wear | Yours | Included |
| Where your car spends the trip | A car park | Your driveway |
| Getting from car to terminal | Walk or shuttle with luggage | Dropped at the doors |
| Effect of a delayed return flight | Overstay charges possible | Tracked, no charge |
| Driving home after a long-haul flight | You, tired | Somebody else |
| Available at the cruise terminals | No long-stay parking | Yes |
Parking rates change without notice and depend heavily on the car park and how far ahead you book. Check the operator's site for your dates rather than relying on any figure quoted second-hand, including ours.
Straight answers
A two or three day trip with a pre-booked budget space is where parking is genuinely hard to beat on price, particularly from the closer suburbs like Campbelltown or Camden.
If your trip involves driving somewhere from the airport on your return, or you are dropping the car for somebody else to collect, the comparison is not really about price at all.
Longer trips, drive-up rates, larger groups, and the more distant suburbs where the two round trips you would drive are genuinely long. From the Highlands that is four hours of your own driving per journey.
Cruise terminals — neither White Bay nor the Overseas Passenger Terminal has long-stay parking, so this is not a comparison at all. Also any trip where you would be driving home tired after a red-eye.
The other cost
From Campbelltown or Camden the airport run is roughly 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter each way. From Picton or Tahmoor, over an hour. From Bowral, Moss Vale or Bundanoon, comfortably an hour and a half in normal traffic and longer in the morning peak.
Parking means making that trip twice: out and back on the day you fly, and out and back on the day you return. From the Southern Highlands that is around six hours of driving in total, half of it at unsocial hours and a quarter of it after a long flight.
Whether that is worth the difference in price is a genuine judgement rather than a rhetorical question. For a cheap pre-booked space on a short trip, plenty of people reasonably decide it is. For a fortnight away from the Highlands with a 6am departure, most do not.
Everything else
It can be, if you pre-book a budget long-stay space and there are only one or two of you. Rates start around $190 a week for the cheaper off-airport operators. Drive-up rates at the terminal car parks are several times higher and will not beat a transfer. Either way the parking price excludes the two round trips you drive and the fuel for them.
Because they move without notice and vary by car park, by terminal and by how far ahead you book. A table here would be wrong within months and we would rather send you to the operator's own site for your actual dates than have you rely on a stale figure.
No. Neither White Bay nor the Overseas Passenger Terminal has long-stay parking, which is the single most common surprise for first-time cruise passengers from this district. Commercial parking in Rozelle or the city is possible but has to be arranged separately and is not cheap.
You may run past the period you booked and pay an overstay rate, which is usually the expensive one. A transfer tracks the flight instead, so a delay costs nothing.
The major operators are secured and monitored, and cars are left in them constantly without incident. It is still a fortnight in a public car park rather than in your own garage, which some people mind and others do not.
Cheapest of all in cash terms, and it costs somebody two round trips at awkward hours. That is the same driving the parking option involves, just done by a relative rather than by you.
The structure is the same, but the drive is shorter from almost every suburb we serve, which makes the self-drive option less punishing. Each airport has its own fixed fare, so compare the transfer price alongside the flights.
