Sometimes the sensible answer to a 6am international departure is to sleep near the airport the night before. From the Southern Highlands especially, a 3am pickup is a real cost even when the transfer itself is easy. We run both versions — the pre-dawn direct run and the night-before hotel transfer — and this page is about which one is actually worth it.
The arithmetic
For a 6am international departure out of Bowral, the check-in arithmetic puts the car at your door at about 2:30am. That is not a difficult booking for us — a pickup before 6am carries a set $20 fee — but it does mean a night of broken sleep before a long-haul flight, for everybody travelling.
The alternative is to travel down the evening before, stay at one of the hotels in the airport precinct, and take a five-minute hop to the terminal in the morning. You pay for the hotel room, and you get a proper night's sleep and no motorway in the dark.
Whether that is worth it depends on three things: how far out you live, whether the flight is long-haul, and how many of you there are. From Campbelltown a 4:30am start for a 6am domestic flight is unremarkable and the hotel is an unnecessary expense. From Bundanoon or Robertson, before a fourteen-hour flight, with children, it starts to look like money well spent.
We are not neutral on this — the direct run is one fare and the night-before version is two — so treat the recommendation accordingly. For most domestic departures and most of Macarthur, the direct run is the right call and we will say so.
The options
One fare, one journey, in your own bed until the car arrives. From Macarthur this is almost always the right answer; from the Highlands it is fine for domestic flights and merely tiring before a long-haul.
A transfer down in the evening at the ordinary published fare, a night's sleep close to the terminal, and a short hop across in the morning. The evening run is a much more pleasant drive than the 3am one.
Worth considering if you want the evening for something other than a hotel room near a runway. The morning hop to the terminal is longer and needs a little more time built in.
Less common but occasionally sensible after a red-eye arrival — sleep first, travel out to the Highlands in daylight. The fare is the same whichever day you make the journey.
Practicalities
The evening run down is an ordinary transfer at your suburb's published fare. Book it exactly as you would a direct airport run and give us the hotel name and address rather than the terminal.
The morning hop from the hotel to your terminal is a short trip and is quoted separately, since neither end is one of our 75 suburbs. Many airport-precinct hotels also run their own shuttle to the terminals, which is worth asking about when you book the room — if it suits your departure time, it is likely cheaper than anything we could offer.
For the return journey, the flight-tracked arrival transfer works the same way whether you go straight home or stay a night first. Tell us which and we will time it accordingly.
Everything else
It depends on the distance and the flight. From Macarthur, generally not — a 4:30am pickup for a 6am departure is unremarkable. From the far Southern Highlands before a long-haul international flight, with a family, it is often worth the room. We will give you a straight answer if you ask, even though the direct run earns us more.
No. A pickup before 6am adds a set $20; there is no other early-start premium. That is precisely why the hotel question is about sleep rather than about our fare.
The same published fare as the run to the terminal itself, because we price by your suburb rather than by the exact destination. An evening run to a Mascot hotel costs what a morning run to T1 costs.
Yes, quoted separately as a short local trip. Do check whether your hotel runs its own terminal shuttle first — many in the precinct do, and if the timing suits it will be cheaper than booking us.
We do not have a preferred hotel and we take no commission from any of them, so we are not going to pretend to an opinion. The precinct around Mascot and Wolli Creek has the usual range; book on whatever criteria you normally use.
No — it is more expensive, because you pay for the room on top of the transfer. The reason people do it is sleep before a long flight, not money.
